RE: College football

bugeater58--I know what a bugeater is! DH and I are fans too. I won't give it away! I'll be at the watch party Saturday night (DH can't make it). I can hardly wait until then!

RE: I must be nuts

DH and I bought a TT in June 2007 and traded it for a 5'er this past May. We talked about buying a 5th wheel last year, but we had a 1/2 ton GMC and didn't think we could get what we wanted and be able to tow it with a 1/2 ton. Although our TT was made for 1/2 ton pickups, ours didn't seem to be able to handle it and we traded it for a 3/4 ton GMC last November. We made the "mistake" of going to an RV show this spring and looked at 5th wheels. Of course, we found a Gulfstream that we really liked and luckily enough, it was one we could purchase through the dealership where we bought the TT. We looked at some other 5th wheels, but couldn't stand the dealership salesmen. So, we ended up buying the Gulfstream and now we don't think we will ever go back to a TT. We are looking forward to full-timing someday. No, you're not crazy--you are just enjoying life. Go out and enjoy your 5th wheel!

One Pan Brownies

I just made these for work today and they are almost all gone! These brownies are easy to make and they are delicious. My mom and I used to bake these brownies together when the family was getting together. ONE-PAN BROWNIES ¼ lb. margarine 4 eggs ½ C. corn or vegetable, etc. oil ½ tsp. salt 7 Tbsp. (or 6 heaping) of cocoa 1 tsp. baking powder 2 C. sugar 1 ½ C. flour 2 tsp. vanilla ½ C. chopped nuts (walnuts, pecans, etc. In a 2 quart saucepan, melt margarine, oil and cocoa, stirring with a spoon until smooth. Remove from heat and stir in sugar and vanilla. Add eggs, stirring until smooth. Add salt, baking powder and flour; mix well. Stir in nuts. Pour into a 13" x 9" prepared pan. Bake at 325 to 350 degrees for approximately 30 to 35 minutes (or until toothpick comes out clean).

RE: Need Jewelry Repair in New Mexico

Thanks everyone for all of the suggestions. I appreciate it very, very much. It is so nice to know that I can turn to all of you on the forum when I need assistance. I retrieved my bracelet from the jewelry store in Tulsa today. They said "we're so sorry that it is so expensive to repair it". They wanted $150 to replace a tiny, tiny piece of turquoise. Yep, they lost my business! Thanks to Cat (CatandJim), I found a really nice little jewelry repair shop here in Tulsa. Cat had been there before and was pleased with their repair work. I took the bracelet to them and it will be repaired for the grand total of $6 or so. I should have my bracelet back in a week or so. A special "thank you" to Hgarnerno1 who offered to fix it for me. :) I am still planning to check out the places that everyone mentioned in Gallup. DH will just have to stop for awhile and let me shop in October!

RE: What have I done - Go to the RV show to look

Congratulations on your new 5th wheel. Ignore those people who want to "rain on your parade'! DH and I made the same "mistake"--we went to an RV show in OKC, which got us thinking about trading our TT for a 5th wheel. We had traded our 1/2 ton pickup for a 3/4 ton GMC last November, so we could handle a 5th wheel. We went to another RV show in Tulsa and found a 37' Gulfstream 5th wheel with a rear living room. Luckily, it was being sold by the same dealer that we purchased our TT from--Route 66 in Claremore. We think they are a great dealership and we traded our TT in May. I liked our TT--it was a 34' Flagstaff, but it was a bit hard to manuever into its parking space next to our house--which is very tight. Plus, we had a very scary 8 hour drive on our way to the Grand Canyon in March due to extremely strong crosswinds. Despite the anti-sway hitch, the TT was whipping around in the crosswinds and every time a truck would pass us, I held onto the truck for dear life. Our 5th wheel, on the other hand, is much more stable in the wind. According to DH, it is much, much easier to hook-up and easier to manuever into its parking spot. I can relax now while we are towing and I don't dread the experience (as much) when we park the trailer at home. Plus, I feel like I have more room overall and a bit more privacy when I am in the bedroom of the 5th wheel. The only drawback that I found is the tendency to fall down the stairs of the 5th wheel! After getting used to no stairs in the TT, I wasn't used to the stairs in the 5th wheel. I had to catch myself a couple of times before I took a downward tumble. I think that you will really enjoy your 5th wheel. I don't think there is any way that DH or I would go back to a TT again. I have banned DH from going to any more RV shows though!

RE: Big Decision

DH and I purchased a Gulfstream 5th wheel this past May. So far, we have not had any major problems with it. There are a few niggling problems that we will have to go to our dealer to fix. The two remaining ones are a rear tail light that keeps going off (we think there is a short in it) and the kitchen sink faucet is wobbly (we have tightened it as much as we can and it still jiggles, which bugs the daylights out of me!). The shower stall hadn't been caulked when we picked up our unit, but that problem was easily solved by DH. Luckily, we have a great dealer and we know that we can rely on them for service. Our 5th wheel is not a bunkhouse model--it is a rear living model-- so I can't comment on that specific one. Regarding an earlier post--it would be nice to have a mid-range used model if you can find one. For DH and myself, we would rather have a new trailer where we don't have to worry about problems associated with the previous owner and we know the maintenance history of the trailer. We do take a depreciation hit (not as much as we thought on the TT we bought last year and traded in for the 5th wheel!), but we are willing to do that to have the unit we wanted. Rear living units are not nearly as plentiful as bunkhouse styles. You might have more choice than we did. Anyway, we do like our Gulfstream. Are there things that we would like to change--sure, but that's true with any trailer! Do what is best for you and your family.

RE: Tortilla pinwheel thingies

I keep forgetting to check my recipe, so I am just going to "wing it". Mexican Tortilla Roll-ups 1/2 C. of softened cream cheese (I often use Neufchatel cheese to help cut the calories--you can't taste any difference!) 1 1/2 to 2 Tbsp. cilantro flakes 1 to 2 tsp. of McCormick's Mexican Seasoning (I use more because I like mine spicy!) Chopped chives, green chilies, jalapenos, tomatoes, chopped onions, or any other item that you would like to add. Cheese slices (I like to use Monterey Jack or American slices) Tortillas Mix the cream cheese, cilantro, and mexican seasoning blend together. Spread evenly onto the tortillas and make sure that each one has enough "good stuff" on it to be tasty. Place the cheese slices on top of the tortillas and the cream cheese mixture. Beginning at one end of the tortilla, roll up into a cigar shape. Wrap in plastic wrap and refrigerate overnight to let the cream cheese mixture blend. Cut into 1" slices and serve with salsa.

RE: Need Jewelry Repair in New Mexico

Since we are going right through Gallup, I'll try to convince DH to stop for a short break and check out the hotel and the shopping. A girl can never own too much turquoise! We live within a mile of Route 66 and I drive part of it during my daily commute to work. DH and I enjoy seeing the Route 66 icons like the Blue Whale when we go to Claremore. I would love to take the 5th Wheel and drive the entire route--perhaps when DH and I retire! Sir Paul McCartney and one of his friends in the U.S. were traveling Route 66 from coast to coast just over a week ago. They made stops in Tulsa and OKC and Tucumcari. In the meantime, we are stopping overnight in Winslow, Arizona on our way to Utah. DH and I are planning to go and stand "on the corner in Winslow"! Only two months to go until I get to go camping again. I haven't been out since DH went back to sea in June and it has been a LONG summer without any camping. Can you tell that I am counting down the days?!!

RE: Need Jewelry Repair in New Mexico

DH and I will be out in Utah in October visiting Arches, Zion and Bryce. So a quick trip to Gallup wouldn't be out of the question. Now, if I could just find a job in New Mexico! DH and I fell in love with the state last year. We have been there three times already. My mouth is watering just thinking about New Mexican cuisine! :)

RE: Need Jewelry Repair in New Mexico

Thank you both for your helpful hints. It gave me some more avenues to pursue. The bracelet isn't worth much in monetary terms, but it has sentimental value. It makes me happy when I wear it and that is worth a lot!

Need Jewelry Repair in New Mexico

Do any of you know of a reputable jeweler who does jewelry repair in New Mexico? I purchased a second-hand turquoise bracelet at a Native American market near Santa Fe last summer. I wear it all the time. It is a silver bracelet with a chevron pattern. Last week, I noticed that one of the turquoise stones had split in half and fallen out of the bracelet. I took it to a local jeweler and they want $135 to replace the stone. Since the stone is about 2 centimeters long and 1/2 centimeter wide, I feel that is too much money to repair it. Plus, that is nearly 3 times what I paid for it originally! They tell me that it costs so much because they will have to waste a large amount of turquoise to get the small stone. Since it was probably a "waste piece" that was used to make the bracelet initially, I am having doubts about having it repaired here in Tulsa. I am hoping that if I send it to New Mexico--which is where I purchased it--they might be able to repair it more expertly and use native turquoise. Can any of you help me with a recommendation? RE: Tortilla pinwheel thingies

I've got a recipe for Mexican tortilla roll-ups that are always a hit. It's been awhile since I made them so I don't remember the measurements of all the ingredients. I'll check my recipe tonight and post it later. In the meantime, I've also made these roll-ups, but they don't involve tortillas. Pastrami Roll-ups 1/2 lb. of thinly sliced pastrami 1/3 C. soft cream cheese with chives and onions 1/2 C. roasted red bell peppers, cut into 3/4 inch wide strips. If you purchase them in a jar, drain the juice. Spread each pastrami slice with cream cheese. Top each with a roasted pepper piece at one end of the pastrami. Starting at the edge with the pepper, roll up tightly. Refrigerate at least 2 hours or until they are firm. I like to do them overnight. Slice each roll into 1" thick pieces. Secure each roll-up with a party toothpick.

RE: It's getting close...tailgate season!!

DH and I are hoping to head up to Nebraska for some Husker football games after DH gets home from the sea. I can hardly wait!! GO BIG RED! GO BIG RED! We saw some great tailgating at the College World Series in Omaha this summer. My favorite was a mini school bus with a kid's pool on top. The guys were chilling in the pool. By the way, CPCfiver, we always cheer for LSU when they are in the CWS (and have for many years). We love your baseball fans--they're a riot!

RE: United States Stuns France in 400m Relay!!!!

I'm still smiling this morning! I too was jumping up and down in front of the TV last night. The dogs must have thought I'd gone crazy! I must admit that I felt sorry for the other three members of the French team, but not for the loudmouth. :) It was truly priceless to watch Lezak swim that last leg of the race. Congratulations to all four members of the team. As far as time zones go--it is a 13 hour difference from Beijing to the central U.S. You can have any of the events spoiled by the evening news. Just do as I do and don't click on any "spoiler links" or listen to the sports section on the news.

RE: Check your lights!!!!

We have a 2009 trailer that has a brake light that seems to constantly jiggle loose. We check it every time before we travel and it is always out. There may be a short or a defective light. DH takes off the cover and jiggles it and it works again. I'm sure the bumpy roads here in Oklahoma jiggle it loose again right away! When DH gets home again from the sea, we will have to figure out the problem. So, please don't assume that those of us with non-working brake lights don't check them or don't care. In our case, it is a mechanical failure that we have yet to solve.

RE: What about diesels?

A simple answer. There is more energy in Diesel fuel vs. Gasoline. And the turbo with 4 valves per cyl don't have anything to do with it.:R No the turbo and 4 valves have NOTHING to do with it as these can both be found on a gas engine for the same benifits...therefore they do not make a diesel more efficient than a gas engine. Diesel fuel has a higher calorific value than gas and so there is more energy to be squeezed (pardon the pun) from each gallon.

RE: Salsa Anyone?

I requested salsa recipes about a month ago. Here is the link for the recipes that I received. There are about 3 pages of recipes. I am slowing working my way through them. The ones that I have already tried have been very good. I almost stopped at a roadside stand this afternoon to get some more tomatoes, but it is just too dang hot (over 100 degrees) here right now. http://www.woodalls.com/cforum/index.cfm/fuseaction/thread/tid/21575998/srt/pa/pging/1/page/1 I don't know how to make the link active, so just cut and paste it into your browser or you can do a search for salsa within Camp Cooks and look for my name. Happy cooking!

RE: Are you a Tigger or an Eeyore?

Mandrake, I would have NEVER guessed that you were a Tigger!! :) Nothing bad will happen to you if you are one or the other or a combination. It is just a choice as to how you live your life. I am really a combination of both, but I am definitely more of a Tigger. I tend to have a positive outlook on life and try to smile about something everyday. I tend to be shy when I first meet you and then I become very outgoing. Camping definitely makes me a Tigger! I am so very happy when I am camping with DH and really look forward to being able to do it full time.

Are you a Tigger or an Eeyore?

I am sitting here watching Diane Sawyer's interviews with Randy Pausch and his wife. For those of you who might not know him--he is the former Carnagie Mellon professor who wrote a book called "The Last Lecture". It is a book about living with a terminal illness--ie. pancreatic cancer. He passed away last Friday. It hits close to home for me because I lost my dear mother to this terrible disease 3 years ago last Friday (a big coincidence). It is the most fatal of all cancers--about 98%. There was an earlier thread on Randy Pausch. If you haven't read it, I would recommend that you read "The Last Lecture"--and it isn't because I am a librarian! It truly is an inspiring book. He challenged readers and his students to decide how they are going to live their lives. Are you going to let life get you down (ie. Eeyore) or are you going to embrace and celebrate every day that you are alive (ie. Tigger)? So, are you a Tigger or an Eeyore? I'll start it off. I am generally a Tigger, but right now, I am a bit of an Eeyore. How about you?

RE: How can I say Thank you?

What a loving tribute to Skip. Aside from the OU Sooner shirts (DH and I are NU Husker fans!), it sounds like his life was well celebrated by those who loved him so much. I hope that when my time comes that my life will be celebrated so joyfully. I do know where DH wants to be buried, but I have no idea what to do with myself. My parents are buried in a veteran's cemetery, I don't have much contact with my brothers, and DH's family is in England (which is where he wants his ashes spread). I feel like I have nowhere to go. I guess I need to decide so I can get a will put together! I agree that it is very important to have your wishes known to your loved ones. Even though Skip is gone, I hope that DH and I will have an opportunity to meet you in a campground someday. We just wish we could have met Skip too.
